H2 Vision Centres has a dedicated Dry Eye Clinic where our optometrist will conduct a thorough assessment of the causes of your dry eye. This allows development of a multipronged individualised treatment plan to manage your dry eye in the short and long term. Please allow 45-60 minutes for this appointment.

What do I need to bring to my Dry Eye Assessment?

  • Complete list of current medications, including supplements
  • Complete list of known allergies
  • All eyedrops and lid cleaning products you are currently using

What should I expect during my Dry Eye Assessment?

Your Dry Eye Assessment will depend on your individual circumstances and may include any of the following:

  • Discussion of your concerns and symptoms. Documentation of medications, general health and lifestyle factors
  • Assessment of severity of symptoms, using validated questionnaires
  • Assessment of anatomical structures using a slit lamp microscope
    • Lids
    • Lashes
    • Cornea (the clear part in front of the coloured iris)
    • Conjunctiva (the white part)
    • Skin around eyes
  • Assessment of function
    • Blinking
      • Frequency
      • Completeness
      • Maximum time between blinks
    • Lid Muscles
      • Power
      • Position
      • Range of movement
    • Tear Drainage
      • Position of drainage apparatus
      • Tear flow into nose
    • Tears
      • Fluorescein (yellow) eyedrops to highlight the tears and assess their movement and flow

      • Schirmer Test to assess the quantity of aqueous tears produced
    • Meibomian Glands – infrared images (Meibography) of the Meibomian glands in your upper and/or lower lids to assess the degree of function/dysfunction

  • Development of an individualized treatment plan targeting both short term relief and long term management

What will I take away from my Dry Eye Assessment?

  • A greater understanding of the factors contributing to your dry eye
  • A printed treatment plan based on your individual findings. This will address short term relief of symptoms and long term management of the underlying causes of dry eye. This may include:
    • Which eyedrops to use and how often
    • Eyelid hygiene
    • Recommendations on your suitability for Meibomian Gland Expression and Intense Regulated Pulsed Light
    • Dietary advise
    • Environmental alterations
    • Blink training
